Photo of the Week: Still life with bags
Shops here tend to be small, often narrow and often they are the downstairs floor of someone’s home. Many open onto the sidewalk in order to take full advantage of the available centimetres. Every surface is used and goods are crammed together so no space is wasted. In the US, shops tend to spend a lot of time planning how to display their products but it ends up feeling sterile. Here, merchandise displayed outside during the day must be easy to move indoors at night or during a monsoon so it is hung on wires, from the metal gates used to lock the shops at night or placed in baskets on the floor in an array of still lives and small compositions that make photographing them easy.
