Photo of the Week: The Gleaners

I haven’t posted a photo of the week in a while.  I was in Cao Bằng, near the Chinese border, the other weekend–more on that trip later–and farmers were harvesting rice in what must be a backbreaking process as it is mostly done my hand.  The paddies are planted by hand, with help from water buffalo-drawn plows, then picked by hand.  The rice is milled with rudimentary machines and laid out to dry.  Northern Vietnam is incredibly poor and the people work incredibly hard.  The mountains and rice paddies are beautiful, though I might be less likely to appreciate them if I were doing the work.
